I know that sounds funny, but...
I’m making something of a boardtrack racer replica and I wanted to stick in a small V-twin engine. I found a 125cc twin from a Yamaha Virago (a moped styled like a cruiser), but it has 11 HP.
This is my first bike (and my first machine, I am 17 years of age), I think 11 HP is a bit too much for me to handle yet, so before I move up I’d like to start with something small. I may go with the Virago engine, but just in case I’d like to see if there’s something smaller...

Thanks!

if 11HP is too much, then you shouldnt be on a bike, period.
Even the most basic CBR125 has like 8 hp. And I dont know if i would ride that in the city.

11hp is pretty much nothing even on a bike.

Instead of saying that a moped has too much power, have you considered trying to take a safety course to see what its like to ride a bike? I admire your spirit of making this yourself but perhaps it would be more prudent to not put the cart before the horse so to speak. I took my MSF course on something like a 20ish HP single 200cc motor. It felt weak. It struggled to break 35. I don’t need a 200hp superbike, but perhaps a properly sorted 40hp would do very nicely. I would like to comfortably do 45-55mph without feeling like I’m straining the bike or my ability to control it.
I’m not saying to not do this project from a fun perspective, but if you want to ride in the street, please get something with more than 11 HP and get comfortable riding it.

11 hp? Are you mad? That’s way too much for a beginner!

I’m kind of surprised you say that, because I’ve been told by an experienced motorcyclist that I’ll kill myself with that much.
This is the engine in question (granted, with modded exhaust so it sounds a little fiercer) is this really nothing? It seems to have adequate get-up-and-go, in any case the frame I’ll be putting it in is much smaller and lighter.

I’m 100% sure they thought you ment a 125HP motor, not a 125CC motor.
seriously, in canada and the straes, i say start on a 250 or a 300. They have about 25-30 HP to START on. If you think you wont be able to handle [a 125] that shows that either
A: you REALLY shouldnt be on a bike
or B: you are VERY ignorant/uninformed about them.
Neither of these are good situations. Go find a 125 that a buddy owns, take it for a rid, and realize just how slow it actually is.

Pretty sure I’m B. I’m a true beginner, I was told by someone I know that my 6.5 HP engine which I had planned before was pushing the boundaries of safety. Now I’m not sure what to think :P
But thanks for your advice, I’ll keep it in mind.
For what it’s worth, this really is more of a “moped” than a motorcycle. Here’s the WIP shot:
I don’t even know if the frame itself can handle 11 HP, considering it’s made from EMT. (it will have added supports). I’ve no doubt that I myself can become used to 11 HP.

I think they are less concerned about you being able to handle the power and more the frame being able to handle the power.

There were concerns from both sides. I intend on making more supports, also the engine platform will be two slabs of metal going to the rear.
